The Construction and Demolition industry is known for its challenges when it comes to physical wellbeing such as injuries from falls and accidents, musculoskeletal disorders and exposure to hazardous materials. However, mental wellbeing is equally as challenging in this sector.
Workers in construction are 4 times more likely to commit suicide than any other industry*.
Why? High pressure environments, social isolation working away, substance abuse to cope with stress and a belief culture that mental health struggles show weakness to name a few.
What can you do to reduce risk within your business?
A proactive approach to prevention is vital.
You don’t wait for someone to physically fall off a ladder then give them a lesson on working at height. Apply the same approach to Mental Health Awareness.
- Foster a culture of Mental Health being a priority in the company – An understanding of It’s OK to not be OK
- Train employees to become Mental Health First Aiders. They are the closest to each other, empower them to spot the signs and offer initial help.
- Ingrain daily or weekly check in practices – such as morning briefings to help reduce stress levels
- Offer Employee Assistance Programmes (EAPs) that provide access to mental health services such as counselling and support groups.
- Promote links to the Lighthouse Club or Mates in Mind who’s campaigns raise awareness, reduce stigma and open conversations on mental health to this industry.
